Hedland Maritime Initiative is collaborating with stakeholders to activate the West End into a vibrant Maritime Precinct as a long-term project that aims to create multiple opportunities for new economic activity.

Owners of 81 per cent of the eligible residential properties are involved in the Port Hedland Voluntary Buy–Back Scheme process, which is administered by HMI.

As at 1 March, of the estimated 404 eligible properties, 186 have been acquired and:

  • 71 per cent had been or were being valued
  • 49 per cent had been sold or were settling to HMI
  • Owners of 282 properties had received their offer letter.

To date, HMI has issued offers to owners of 70 per cent of the eligible properties in Port Hedland’s West End, with only four offers declined.

HMI Managing Director Karlene Bylund said the latest indexation applied on 6 February resulted in the HMI team processing revised offers to owners of 74 eligible properties.

“There is one further indexation to apply on 6 August 2023 before the scheme closes on 31 December 2023,” Karlene added.

The buy-back scheme has just 10 months to run, and planning is advanced for the next use of properties acquired by HMI. Current plans range from short-stay accommodation, community, tourism and education and training concepts.

Karlene said the proposed Pilbara Training College planning is progressing well and concepts will be explored for a maritime museum, office, and community space to complement the current exhibits around Port Hedland that celebrate its history.

“As these and other Maritime Precinct development discussions progress, I am thrilled to lead HMI’s involvement to establish the proposed Pilbara Training College,” she said.

“The proposed college is envisioned to be an iconic development within the Maritime Precinct, with the ultimate development providing training facilities for the maritime, logistics and resource industries.”

The marine simulation training centre is in the final commissioning steps to be operational.
