Hedland Maritime Initiative has acquired 63 per cent of the eligible residential properties and over 18 per cent of the eligible non-residential properties via the Port Hedland Voluntary Buy-Back Scheme since its inception in 2021.
Karlene Bylund, HMI’s Managing Director said that 87 per cent of all eligible properties in Port Hedland’s West End had participated in its valuation process.
“Of the 404 original eligible residential properties, 258 have been acquired. An additional 4 eligible non-residential properties have also been acquired,” Ms Bylund said.
HMI’s next demolition project is under way, with structures on five acquired properties to be demolished because of major structural defects and hazardous materials presenting significant safety concerns.
This forms part of HMI’s second demolition project, with contractors expecting to start demolition works in the coming weeks and conclude in early 2025. All structures being demolished are vacant.
HMI is working with its contractors and the Town of Port Hedland to ensure the demolitions occur safely, including the removal of all hazardous materials.
Other acquired properties in poor condition are being assessed for potential demolition.
